AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme 2026: Apply For Tractor And Earthmoving Mechanic Training

AFGRI Equipment is inviting applications for its 2026 Apprenticeship Programme, offering young South Africans the opportunity to qualify as either a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic.

This apprenticeship programme is ideal for individuals who are passionate about mechanical work and want to build a career in the agriculture and engineering sectors.

About AFGRI Equipment

AFGRI Equipment has been the official John Deere agency in South Africa since 1962, with a strong presence across the North-East and South-West regions. The company operates an extensive branch network across South Africa, as well as internationally in Botswana, Kenya, Uganda and Western Australia.

AFGRI provides specialised services through fully equipped workshops that focus on the repair and maintenance of agricultural machinery, construction equipment, forestry machines, and turf and golf equipment.

AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme Details

The AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme runs over a period of three years and combines practical workplace experience with structured technical training.

Successful candidates will be trained to become qualified Tractor Mechanics or Earthmoving Mechanics, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a real working environment.

Probation Period

The first six months of the apprenticeship serve as a probation period. During this time, both the apprentice and AFGRI can assess whether the programme is the right fit. Either party may withdraw during this period without penalty.

Training Structure

After completing the probation period, apprentices will enter into a formal contract with AFGRI and begin structured training, which may include:

– Attendance at a Practical Training Institute for certain training phases
– Distance learning through a registered college (where required)
– Saturday classes, depending on the training schedule
– Product-specific training from suppliers and AFGRI specialists
– Internal training sessions facilitated by industry experts

Training Authorities

The apprenticeship programme is supported by recognised Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), including AgriSETA and MerSETA. Apprentices will be formally registered with one of these SETAs for the duration of their training.

Costs And Commitment

Training costs are covered by AFGRI, provided that all modules are successfully completed. However, any failed subjects or training phases must be repeated at the apprentice’s own cost and time.

The apprenticeship is governed by a three-year contract, along with a work-back agreement equal to the duration of the training period. If an apprentice withdraws early, they may be required to repay training costs.
