EPWP Fire Fighters Internships with Polokwane Municipality

Polokwane Local Municipality is now seeking candidates to apply for their EPWP Fire Fighters Internship Programme.

The Disaster Management and Fire Services Department in Polokwane has opened applications for 19 EPWP Skilled Fire Fighter positions on a 12-month fixed-term contract.

This opportunity is aimed at qualified candidates interested in gaining experience in fire and rescue services while serving local communities through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Fire Fighter Programme Details

  • Position: EPWP Skilled Fire Fighters
  • Number of posts: 19
  • Contract duration: 12 months
  • Location: Polokwane
  • Monthly salary: R7 500
  • Reference number: EXT/25/26/129

Successful candidates will be required to work shifts, weekends and public holidays as part of emergency response operations.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • Fire Fighter I qualification
  • Fire Fighter II with Hazmat Operations or equivalent qualification
  • SAQA-accredited qualification from SAESI or IFE
  • Code C1 driver’s licence
  • 0 to 1 year of relevant experience
  • No criminal record

Candidates must also successfully complete:

  • Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
  • Medical Test NFPA 1582

Skills And Competencies Required

The department is looking for candidates with:

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Teamwork and discipline
  • Knowledge of firefighting procedures and equipment
  • Understanding of occupational health and safety practices
  • Ability to carry heavy equipment
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations

Applicants must also be comfortable working in confined environments and handling stressful conditions.

Duties And Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Responding to fire and rescue incidents
  • Attending hazardous material (Haz-Mat) calls
  • Operating within the fire control room
  • Conducting daily vehicle and equipment inspections
  • Maintaining fire stations, vehicles and firefighting equipment
  • Participating in drills and inspections
  • Implementing fire prevention strategies
  • Carrying out general firefighting duties as instructed by supervisors

The programme is designed to strengthen emergency response services while providing practical workplace experience for aspiring firefighters.

Screening And Compliance Requirements

Applicants will undergo several screening processes before appointment, including:

  • Criminal record checks
  • Physical fitness assessments
  • Medical examinations to determine fitness for duty
