PepsiCo R&D Learnership 2026: Packaging Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Opportunity

PepsiCo is offering a Research and Development (R&D) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Learnership in Packaging. This opportunity is ideal for final-year students in scientific fields who want to gain practical experience in product development, laboratory testing, and food manufacturing processes.

About the PepsiCo R&D Learnership

As an R&D WIL learner, you will support the South African R&D team in executing product development projects, conducting laboratory tests, and assisting with production and pilot plant trials. You will work closely with experienced technologists and project teams to deliver innovative packaging and product solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Your duties during the learnership will include:

• Assisting with trial protocols and coordinating with key stakeholders
• Supporting R&D projects, including pilot plant and production trials
• Working with R&D Technologists to execute low-complexity product development projects
• Attending and assisting during factory and pilot plant trials
• Conducting routine product quality and analytical tests
• Collecting product samples from production lines for development purposes
• Collaborating with product developers and cross-functional teams
• Maintaining good manufacturing practices (GMP) and hygiene standards
• Supporting Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) initiatives
• Completing online training to build business knowledge

Laboratory and Technical Work

As part of your training, you will perform key laboratory tests and processes, including:

• Salt analysis
• Oil analysis
• Bulk density analysis
• Particle size analysis
• Moisture analysis
• Seasoning applications to meet product specifications

Project Support Activities

You will also contribute to project coordination and reporting by:

• Compiling project timelines and ensuring resources are available
• Supporting scale-up activities in production plants and co-manufacturing facilities
• Preparing accurate reports and recommendations for project teams
• Drafting technical documentation such as specifications and standards
• Working with regulatory teams to ensure legal compliance

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the PepsiCo R&D Learnership, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Completed the theoretical component of a scientific qualification (final-year student)
• Minimum average of 60% in studies
• Degree or diploma in Biochemistry, Food Technology, Engineering, or a related field
• Must be a South African citizen
• Strong analytical and technical skills, with basic knowledge of statistics
• Ability to interpret data and provide actionable insights
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• Self-motivated, organised, and detail-oriented
• Ability to work independently and adapt to change
• High level of integrity and professionalism
• A valid driver’s licence will be advantageous
