Rio Tinto is inviting unemployed young South Africans to apply for its 2026 Artisan Learnership Programme, to gain accredited artisan training and workplace experience in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
The learnership programme offers candidates the opportunity to gain accredited artisan training and workplace experience in various trade occupations within the mining and industrial sector.
Successful learners will complete a structured occupational training programme that combines theoretical learning, practical training and workplace experience.

Applications are open for the following Occupational Trade Certificate programmes:
- Diesel Mechanic
- Boiler Maker
- Millwright
- Refractory Mason
- Electrician
- Mechanical Fitter
- Instrumentation
About The Artisan Learnership Programme
The Artisan Learnership Programme is an occupationally directed training initiative registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Upon successful completion of the programme, learners will receive a Trade Certificate issued by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).
The programme is designed to provide comprehensive technical training aligned with industry requirements.
Learners will gain exposure to:
- Theoretical trade knowledge
- Practical skills development
- Workplace-based learning
- Industry-focused artisan training
Minimum Requirements For The Learnership
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be an unemployed youth
- Have successfully completed Grade 12/Matric
- Have Mathematics or Technical Mathematics and Physical Science or Technical Matric subjects
- Hold a trade-related qualification
- Have a valid South African driver’s licence (minimum Code B)
- Not be registered for another active learnership or apprenticeship funded by a SETA or private institution
- Reside within the King Cetshwayo District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal
