Allan Gray Scholarship Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the 2026 Allan Gray Scholarship Programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current Grade 6 learner in the year of application
  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be between 11 and 12 years old while in Grade 6
  • Have been born in 2014 or 2015
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Achieve a minimum average of 70% in both English and Mathematics

Allan Gray Scholarship Application Process

The scholarship selection process consists of several stages designed to identify learners with strong academic ability and future potential.

Step 1: Submit An Application

Applicants must complete and submit the scholarship application form together with all required supporting documents.

Step 2: Foundation Assessment

Shortlisted learners will be invited to write the Allan Gray Foundation assessment in December 2026.

The assessment will be conducted in:

  • English
  • Mathematics

The assessment is based on Grade 6-level content.

Step 3: Interview Process

Candidates who perform well in the assessment will be invited to attend interviews during early 2027.

Step 4: Placement School Interviews

Recommended candidates will then participate in interviews with the placement schools.

Step 5: Scholarship Award

Learners whose applications are approved by the placement schools will be awarded the Allan Gray Scholarship in May 2027.

Step 6: Final Agreement

Once the scholarship has been awarded, a Memorandum of Agreement will be signed between:

  • The Allan Gray Foundation
  • The placement school
  • The learner’s custodian or guardian
