Dis-Chem Pharmacies is calling on aspiring pharmacy professionals to apply for its Dispensary Support Learnership Programme. This opportunity is designed for individuals who want to start a career in the pharmaceutical sector while gaining practical, workplace-based training under the supervision of qualified pharmacists.
What You Will Learn and Do
As a learner in this programme, you will work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and be involved in:
• Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and substances
• Helping with the preparation, compounding, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines according to approved procedures
• Unpacking, merchandising, and organising dispensary stock and shelves
• Learning to interpret prescriptions and understanding legal and ethical requirements
• Picking, packing, labelling, and checking medications accurately
• Managing stock control, including expiry dates and shelf organisation
• Following up with patients on prescription tracking and appointments
• Assisting with call centre scripts, patient service queries, and medical scheme authorisations (chronic, HIV & AIDS, oncology)
• Providing health information to customers
• Reporting stock shortages or errors and receiving stock in line with company procedures
Competencies Required
Essential Skills:
• Fluency in English and at least one additional language (reading, writing, speaking)
• Strong time management, accuracy, and attention to detail
• Good communication, customer service, and teamwork skills
• Problem-solving ability, accountability, honesty, and professional conduct
• Computer literacy and numerical skills
Advantageous Skills:
• Previous retail or FMCG experience, especially within Dis-Chem
• Knowledge of complementary medicines, family planning, and pharmacy systems (Unisolv, SAP, E-Scripting)
Special Conditions of Employment
• Must pass a proficiency test to register with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
• Must be a South African citizen
• Clear criminal and credit record (MIE checks will apply)
