100 000 National Youth Service Opportunities Open Across South Africa
The National Youth Service (NYS) has opened applications for Phase V of its youth development programme, offering 100 000 opportunities to young people across all nine provinces.
The six-month programme provides participants with community service experience, skills development opportunities and practical workplace exposure while earning a stipend.
The initiative aims to help unemployed youth gain valuable experience that can improve future employment and career opportunities.
About The National Youth Service Programme
The NYS programme focuses on empowering young South Africans through meaningful community-based work, personal development and practical experience.
Participants will contribute positively to their communities while developing workplace skills and strengthening their future career pathways.
Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Live within the local municipality or community where the programme site is located
- Be able to travel to the implementing partner’s site
- Be unemployed and preferably not in education, employment or training (NEET)
- Be willing to contribute positively to the community
- Be able to complete the programme successfully
- Must not have participated in previous NYS programme phases
Young people living with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

How To Apply For The NYS Programme
Applications must be completed through the SA Youth platform.
To apply:
- Visit the SA Youth platform and register
- The registration process takes approximately four minutes
- Existing SA Youth users can log in using their current details
- Once registered, available NYS opportunities near your location will appear
- Follow the instructions on the opportunity card to apply
- If no opportunities appear immediately, search for “NYS” in the platform search bar
Applicants are encouraged to ensure that their SA Youth CV is fully completed before submitting applications.

Closing dates vary depending on the programme site, with the final application deadline set for 1 September 2026.
