Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is offering 60 Horticulture Learnership opportunities for unemployed South African youth residing in Johannesburg. This 12-month learnership is aimed at candidates between the ages of 18 and 35 who hold a Matric certificate or equivalent qualification.

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must have:
• Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or NQF Level 4
• Basic knowledge of health and safety in a horticultural environment
• Basic understanding of soil science
• Ability to read, write and communicate effectively
• Good physical health and fitness for outdoor manual work
What the Horticulture Learnership Covers
1. Plant Care and Maintenance
• Soil preparation and conditioning
• Planting ornamental and herbaceous plants
• Pruning and shaping shrubs and trees
• Applying fertilisers to plants and seedlings
• Watering landscaped areas and managing irrigation systems
2. Propagation and Cultivation
• Propagating plants from seeds and cuttings
• Using appropriate growth media
• Basic nursery care and identification of ornamental seedlings
3. Pest and Weed Control
• Manual and chemical weed removal
• Safe application of pest control methods, herbicides and pesticides
4. Environmental and Safety Standards
• Applying health and safety principles in horticulture
• Implementing environmental protection practices
5. Technical and Practical Skills
• Safe handling of horticultural tools and machinery such as mowers
• Working effectively in an outdoor environment
Important Information
The learnership will run for 12 months. Candidates should note that there is no guarantee of permanent employment after completion of the programme.
This Johannesburg City Parks & Zoo Horticulture Learnership offers valuable hands-on experience in landscaping, plant care and environmental maintenance while earning a monthly stipend of R4 000.
