Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of clinical and operational duties, including patient care such as monitoring, feeding, handling animals and assisting with veterinary procedures. The role also involves clinic management tasks including hygiene control, stock management, pharmacy orders, equipment care, safety measures and charge sheet administration.
Interns will assist with practical training of students, support demonstrations, and guide students and student nurses with specific tasks such as preparing drips. Additional responsibilities include communicating with clients, private practitioners, sales representatives and visiting students, ensuring compliance with biosecurity and safety standards, and reporting any safety concerns.
The position requires flexibility to work across different sections within the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital, as well as performing shift duties and working outside normal office hours when required.
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must hold a BVetNurse qualification and be registered as a Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council.
Required Skills and Competencies
Candidates should demonstrate sound knowledge of small and large animal nursing procedures, biosecurity protocols and animal handling. Experience or understanding of ICU equipment, basic diagnostic imaging, theatre equipment and surgical instruments is essential.
The ideal candidate must be detail-oriented, professional and responsible, with strong communication and organisational skills. Computer literacy, physical mobility, the ability to work under pressure, and a strong service orientation are required. Willingness to work weekends, shifts and extended hours is essential to ensure continuous hospital service delivery.

Registration with the Veterinary Nursing Association of South Africa will be considered an advantage.
Selection Process and Remuneration
Shortlisted candidates may be required to complete relevant skills assessments as part of the selection process. The annual remuneration package will be determined in line with University of Pretoria policy guidelines and the level of appointment.
