City of Cape Town Student Internship Opportunities 2026 Now Open
The City of Cape Town is inviting unemployed youth to apply for its Student Internship and Training Opportunities. These fixed-term programmes are designed to provide practical workplace exposure, structured learning and skills development across various City directorates.
If you are permanently residing within the Cape Town municipal jurisdiction and meet the minimum requirements, this could be your opportunity to gain valuable experience and improve your employability.
Who Can Apply?
Only students who permanently reside within the City of Cape Town’s jurisdiction are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to graduates from universities, universities of technology, colleges and TVET colleges within Cape Town.
Interns must not be registered for further studies during the internship period, except for:
- Work Integrated Learning (WIL) students
- PhD and Doctoral students
Available Student Programmes
The City offers several structured training programmes aimed at different qualification levels:
1. Skills Programme (Fixed-Term Contract)
- Grade 10, Grade 11 or National Senior Certificate (Matric)
- N1 – N5 qualifications
- NQF Level 2 – 4
This programme provides structured experiential learning and practical exposure in a workplace environment.
2. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) / In-Service Training (Fixed-Term Contract)
- National Certificate N6 (requiring WIL/In-Service Training)
- Official letter from your institution requesting WIL placement
- Academic transcript
This programme integrates academic learning with workplace application as a requirement to obtain a formal qualification.
3. National N Diploma / Diploma Programme
Available to students who have completed qualifications at TVET colleges or accredited higher education institutions. This full-time programme focuses on skills transfer and workplace readiness.
4. Graduate Internship Programme (GIP) – Fixed-Term Contract
- 3-year Diploma or National Diploma (University or University of Technology)
- Advanced Diploma / B-Tech
- Degree
- Honours
- Masters
- PhD
This programme may be offered on a full-time or part-time basis and is designed to provide structured workplace exposure for graduates.
5. Learnerships (12–24 Months)
- Minimum Grade 12 (additional requirements may apply depending on the learnership)
Learnerships combine structured theoretical learning with practical workplace training, leading to a qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Stipend and Remuneration
Depending on budget availability and programme type, students may receive remuneration. Stipends range from R36.66 per hour to R57.62 per hour. Some project-based opportunities may be unpaid.
