Dis-Chem Pharmacies’ has an opportunity available for a Dispensary Support to join the team. The main purpose of this role is to employ learners who are capable of completing the learner basic pharmacist assistant course.
This course equips learners with an understanding of the underlying principles of key areas related to the pharmaceutical environment and dispensing, while promoting quality on-the-job learning.
Staff will be employed in a Fixed Term position as Dispensary Support until they are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic assistants. Permanent employment will only be offered once qualified as a basic pharmacist assistant.
Minimum Requirements
Essential:
Grade 12 – Matric or a Senior Certificate with Pure Mathematics (50%), Life Science and/or Physical Science, and an overall average of at least 50%.
Job Specification
Dispensary Support staff must have completed a proficiency test qualifying them to apply for registration with the SAPC as a learner basic assistant.
A pharmacist’s assistant registered in this category may perform the following services under the direct supervision of a pharmacist:
- The sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances
- Assist with the compounding, manipulation or preparation of non-sterile medicines according to a formula and SOPs approved by the responsible pharmacist
- Assist with unpacking and merchandising stock and cleaning of dispensary and OTC shelves
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager
- Learn to accurately interpret scripts and act professionally and responsibly within SAPC legal guidelines
- Ensure accurate picking, packing, labelling and checking of medication, while being aware of common dosages and key drug interactions
- Ensure that all medication is checked for accuracy and signed by a pharmacist
- Assist in controlling stock, maintaining shelf organisation, and checking medicine expiry dates
- Follow up on script tracking and appointments as requested by the Dispensary Manager
- Assist with call centre scripts and patient service telephone calls
- Provide health promotion information to individuals
- Assist with scheme authorization for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication
- Report low or out-of-stock items and stock discrepancies to the Dispensary Manager
- Receive dispensary stock according to SOPs

Advantageous:
- Retail FMCG or Dis-Chem front shop experience
- Knowledge of drug and family planning products, complementary medicine
- Experience with Unisolv, SAP, and E-Scripting
Special Conditions of Employment
- Proficiency test assessing eligibility for SAPC registration
- Must be a South African citizen
- MIE, clear criminal and credit record
