If you’re a recent Matriculant looking to start a technical career in the agricultural or earthmoving machinery industry, the AFGRI Apprenticeship Programme 2025 is now open for applications!
This 3-year apprenticeship is your pathway to becoming a qualified Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Mechanic, with comprehensive hands-on training, theoretical learning, and recognised certification – all designed to prepare you for long-term success in the field.
Important: This application is open exclusively to matriculants. A general call for all other applicants will be published in August and September 2025.
What the Apprenticeship Offers
The programme includes:
- A 6-month probation period to assess long-term suitability for both you and AFGRI.
- Enrolment in a formal AFGRI apprenticeship contract for three years.
- Practical training at an accredited institute (if required).
- Distance learning for N subjects via a technical college (including Saturday classes if necessary).
- Specialist product training from industry leaders like John Deere, along with internal training from AFGRI experts.
All training is free of charge if passed. However, any failed subjects must be redone at your own cost and time.
This apprenticeship includes a work-back commitment, requiring you to stay with the company after qualification for a period equal to the duration of your training. The maximum contract period is four years.
Apprentice Responsibilities
As an AFGRI apprentice, you will be trained to:
- Perform repairs and maintenance on agricultural and earthmoving equipment.
- Develop your skills as a Tractor Mechanic or Earthmoving Technician.
- Handle stock control and assist in parts management.
- Deliver customer service in a workshop environment.
- Participate in general duties to support workplace operations.
Minimum Requirements

- A valid driver’s license
- Basic admin, computer, and communication skills
Academic Requirements:
Option 1: N2 Certificate with the following subjects:
Mathematics
Engineering Science
Diesel Trade Theory
PLUS one of the following:
Industrial Electronics
Engineering/Technical Drawing
Motor Trade Theory
Option 2: Matric Certificate (will be considered if you have passed any of the following):
Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy)
Technical Mathematics
Physical Science
Technical Science
Engineering Graphics and Design
If you don’t currently meet the N2 qualification requirements, AFGRI offers support through Further Education and Training as part of the programme.
