- Engineering: Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Engineering qualifications must be a BSc or BEng. BTech qualifications are not accepted.
- Information Technology (IT): Information Technology and Computer Science.

Who Can Apply for the 2027 Astron Energy Bursary?
To qualify for the Astron Energy Bursary, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Be younger than 35 years old.
- Be a South African citizen.
- Be registered for, or intend to pursue, a full-time qualification.
- Be pursuing a qualification level for the first time. Applicants repeating a degree, honours qualification or another qualification at the same level are not eligible.
- Be studying towards, or planning to study towards, a qualification at a tertiary institution registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- Have achieved an average academic mark of at least 70% in the last completed academic year.
Eligible qualifications may include diplomas, advanced diplomas, degrees and master’s qualifications.

Astron Energy Bursary Obligations
Successful applicants must comply with the conditions of the bursary agreement.
Bursary recipients are required to work back for every year of funding they receive. Students who fail to fulfil this obligation may be required to repay the value of the bursary benefits received, together with interest charges.
Applicants and bursary recipients must also remain full-time students and may not have paid employment. If it is discovered that a recipient is not studying full-time or has paid employment, their bursary offer or contract may be terminated, and they may be required to repay all benefits received through the bursary.
