Students and recent graduates looking to gain practical workplace experience can apply for the Transnet Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Trainee Programme.

The Transnet WIL programme is designed to help participants apply the knowledge gained through their studies in a real-world working environment. The programme provides hands-on training, mentorship and exposure to industry-specific tasks.

The WIL Trainee Programme runs for 18 months, giving successful applicants the opportunity to develop practical skills and improve their employability.

What Will WIL Trainees Do?

Successful candidates will be placed within a department or workstream where they will receive practical workplace exposure and support various business activities.

Their responsibilities may include assisting with specific projects, carrying out routine operational tasks under supervision and supporting administrative functions such as documentation and reporting.

Participants will also take part in training sessions, workshops and mentorship programmes. They may shadow experienced professionals to gain insight into workplace practices and participate in problem-solving activities to strengthen their analytical skills.

Communication and Teamwork

WIL trainees will interact with customers, suppliers and internal teams to gain an understanding of business requirements.

They will be expected to provide regular updates on assigned tasks and project progress. Trainees may also act as a central point of contact for queries and assistance within their assigned areas.

Research and Analysis

The Transnet WIL internship will also provide exposure to research and analysis activities.

Trainees may conduct market research, collect and analyse data to support business decisions, and prepare reports and presentations using Microsoft Office tools.

Participants may also assist with process improvement initiatives.

Transnet WIL Programme Requirements

Applicants interested in the Transnet Work Integrated Learning programme must meet the following requirements:

  • A Matric certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Completion of all theoretical subjects from N4 to N6 in one of the following fields: Office Management, Human Resources, Marketing or Financial Management.
  • Must be a South African citizen.
  • Must be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Preference will be given to people with disabilities.
  • Applicants must not have a bursary obligation with another company.
  • Proof of confirmation or a letter from the educational institution, dated most recently.
  • Certified copy of Matric certificate.
  • Academic record.
  • Certified copy of ID.

Skills and Competencies

Candidates applying for the Transnet WIL Trainee Programme should have good written and verbal communication skills and basic computer skills.

Applicants should also be able to work effectively as part of a team and demonstrate problem-solving abilities. Attention to detail, a willingness to learn and strong interpersonal skills are also important.
